Meet Melanie

Growing Food, Community, and Connection.

I am passionate about helping people feel confident and supported as they learn to grow their own vegetables, herbs, and organic food. I believe that with the right guidance, practical skills, and understanding of healthy soil, gardening can become approachable, rewarding, and successful.

I'm an almost native South Floridian, having lived here since 1978, with a deep-rooted connection to our region's unique growing conditions. For over 15 years, I've been immersed in organic gardening, with a focus on seasonal vegetables and herbs suited to South Florida's climate.

What began as a personal interest evolved into a deep, practical understanding of how healthy soil, thoughtful planting, and sustainable practices all work together to create thriving, productive gardens.

While my gardening knowledge is rooted primarily in years of hands-on experience, I also completed horticulture coursework at Florida International University in 2019, which further strengthened my understanding of plant care, seasonal growing, soil health, and sustainable gardening practices.

I have been an active member of the Junior League of Boca Raton since 2020 and have been involved with its Community Garden Committee throughout my membership, including serving as co-chair for two years. I continue helping care for the Boca Raton Community Garden as a welcoming space for local residents. In 2020, I supported the garden's relocation to Meadows Park, working alongside the Junior League of Boca Raton and Brightline to help safely transplant native trees from the original site near the downtown library. I also assisted with the construction of garden plots at the new location in preparation for its 2021 ribbon-cutting grand opening. In 2023, the garden was rededicated in honor of the late Mayor Susan Whelchel and is now known as the Susan Whelchel Community Garden, where I continue supporting community gardening initiatives and helping create opportunities for residents to connect through gardening.

Over the years, I have helped organize food drives featuring organic vegetables grown in the community garden to support our local food bank, Boca Helping Hands, and have facilitated seasonal vegetable gardening workshops, sharing practical guidance on growing organic food. I also serve as a garden co-coordinator for the Pearl City Community Garden in historic downtown Boca Raton, where I continue supporting community-based gardening initiatives and facilitating workshops that help community members build confidence and practical growing skills.

These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the role gardens play in bringing people together, supporting local needs, preserving green spaces, and creating meaningful opportunities for connection. They have also reinforced what I believe deeply: successful gardening starts from the ground up. When we care for the soil, we give plants the best chance to grow strong, produce abundantly, and nourish the families and communities they serve.

Real experience, real results.

My approach is grounded in real, hands-on experience — not just theory. Over the years, I've spent countless hours working directly in the soil, growing organic vegetables and herbs in South Florida's unique climate.

Through observation, trial, and consistency, I've learned what works — and what doesn't.

This allows me to provide straightforward guidance that reflects real-world growing conditions, not just general recommendations.

Why I created MetM Homestead & Learning.

Since 2020, I have facilitated organic vegetable gardening workshops in local community gardens in a volunteer capacity, helping community members and aspiring gardeners build confidence through hands-on growing experiences. The positive feedback I received reinforced what I already believed: many people want to grow their own food, but they often need practical guidance and encouragement to take that first step.

That experience inspired me to turn this work into a profession, leading to the launch of MetM Homestead & Learning.

Through MetM, I provide hands-on guidance on soil building, seasonal planting, crop rotation, composting, and sustainable practices like using kitchen scraps to support the garden naturally.

These simple, effective methods help increase the likelihood of producing healthy, abundant harvests — without relying on harmful chemicals or pesticides, and by using the resources we have naturally to create sustainable gardens.

Sustainability is central to this work, as reducing waste, restoring soil, and growing food locally all contribute to stronger, more resilient communities.

The meaning behind MetM.

Mom et Me.

The name MetM Homestead & Learning carries personal meaning.

Originally born in France, I was drawn to the French word "et," which means "and" in English. The name MetM reflects the idea of "Mom and Me," honoring the importance of having my mother alongside me in this venture.

For me, this work is not only about gardening. It is also about connection, time outdoors, and creating meaningful opportunities to enjoy nature together. I wanted this journey to provide my mother with a way to spend time outside, experience the garden, enjoy fresh air and sunlight, and be part of something rooted in growth, purpose, and family.

I also believe there is something deeply therapeutic about being outside in nature. Gardening has a way of calming the mind, lifting the spirit, and reconnecting people with the natural world around them. Whether young or old, spending time outdoors and working with the soil can be beneficial not only for physical health but for the mind and soul as well.

That personal meaning became part of the heart behind MetM Homestead & Learning.

My mission

"Too often, I've been approached by people who share the same frustration: they start a garden with excitement, only to feel discouraged and eventually give up. Most of the time, it isn't because they lack interest — it's because they were never given the right knowledge, guidance, or practical skills to help them succeed."

My mission is to help cultivate confidence in new and growing gardeners by making the process approachable, seasonal, and hands-on. I want to empower families to become less reliant on grocery stores by learning how to grow wholesome, organic produce with their own hands.

There is something deeply rewarding about placing food on the table that you planted, cared for, and harvested yourself. That sense of connection, confidence, and accomplishment is what I aim to share through MetM Homestead & Learning.

My approach.

My approach is centered on working with nature, not against it.

When people understand how soil, plants, and ecosystems function together, gardening becomes more intuitive, sustainable, and rewarding.

Whether you are just starting or looking to deepen your knowledge, my goal is to provide guidance that feels accessible, supportive, and grounded in real experience.

"Miss Melanie at MetM Homestead & Learning really knows her stuff! She is a very good and thoughtful presenter of information. She has a gift at captivating your attention and keeping it with her library of knowledge of plants and everything pertaining to gardening. I fully trust her to guide me on my gardening path to a successful and thriving garden."

At its core, this work is about reconnecting with the process of growing — one season at a time — while bringing people together through shared garden experiences.
